UACES Fringe Politics in Southeast Europe Collaborative Research Network

Welcome to the Fringe Politics in Southeast Europe collaborative research network (CRN), funded by UACES and co-ordinated by the Centre for European Research at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).

The rationale for the CRN is that post-authoritarian transition has proved particularly challenging for the consolidation of formal democratic politics, and to the liberal transformation, of the successor territories in Southeast Europe (SEE), i.e. Greece, Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania, Bosnia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Albania, and Serbia. Existing research on politics in SEE largely ignores domestic political agency, particularly outside institutionalised state and non-state arenas. Our multi-disciplinary network brings together several strands of politics ‘at the margins’ in SEE that have been largely overlooked by researchers examining the region, which include: war veterans’ groups in ex-Yugoslavia; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) activism; anti-austerity and anti-corruption protests; protests for the right to public spaces; football fan groups (so-called ‘hooliganism’); far right ‘extremism’; Islamism; and fringe right- and left-wing political parties.

The CRN will be organising four workshops on relevant topics over the next three years:

12-13 September 2014: Workshop - Fringe Politics in Southeast Europe: Drivers of Change?, co-hosted by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, and the Institute of Economics, Zagreb

19-20 March 2015: Workshop - Conservative Social Movements and the Mainstreaming of Extremism in Southeast Europe - hosted by The Centre for Southeast European Studies, University of Graz

9-10 May 2016: Workshop - Fringe Political Parties in Southeast and Eastern Europe - hosted by The Centre for EU Studies, Ghent University

January 2017: Workshop hosted by QMUL cross themes in order to distil the linkages and sites of conflict amongst the various strands of the network
